Forget long, boring plane journeys and jet lag this summer. Who needs that? Instead, hop on a scenic ferry this summer and take a trip to Gibsons, BC, which is located just 30 kilometres northwest of Vancouver. Here are three great reasons we’re ditching the plane journey this summer…

Great Reason #1: Fabulous Farmers’ Markets

Forget the big box mega-stores. In Gibsons you can browse the finest, healthiest local produce in two farmers markets that run from late spring to early fall.

Taking place in White Tower Park every Saturday from mid-June to mid-October, Fiddlehead Farmers Market offers the finest produce from local growers, locally-produced jewellery, garden supplies and artwork. You can also enjoy music from local singers and bands.

Alternatively, Gibsons Landing Sunday Market takes place each Sunday in Holland Park from June to September. Sample local homemade baked goodies and preserves, buy the freshest local produce or shop for pretty pottery and knickknacks in this incredibly pretty location overlooking Gibsons Marina.

Great Reason #2: The Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival

Featuring talented musicians from the beautiful Sunshine Coast, the 23rd annual Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival takes place on June 15, 16 and 17. This wonderfully chilled-out even is preceded by 'Jazz Week', a whole week of live music in the town’s local restaurants and venues.

Great Reason #3: Amazing Art

Some great news for art-lovers: the Sunshine Coast is home to one of the highest per-capita populations of artists in Canada. Many of the galleries in Gibsons are situated around Gibsons Landing. Gibsons Public Art Gallery, which focusses on the painting, photography and pottery talents of the region’s artists is a fabulous place to start. You can then continue your art journey to the KlayWerk Studio (by appointment only), Grout Pottery Clayforms and the Sa Boothroyd Gallery.

Gibsons Garden Hotel is a great accommodation option if you’re booking a Gibsons getaway this summer. The recently renovated 52-room property is just a seven-minute drive from the ferry terminal and within easy walking distance of Gibson’s many restaurants, galleries, markets and boutiques.
